This year, I’m hoping to make it a goal to organize our home so that it’s more functional for us. While our home is somewhat organized, there isn’t really a system for most of the things in our home. Meaning, while our kitchen has designated areas for our coffee grinds and cups, our under-the-sink cabinet was a hot mess (until recently), our closet definitely could use some work, and our pantry is far from organized in a systematic way. There are other little cabinets and closets that need work, but those are some of the ones that immediately come to mind for me.
The truth is, we know where things are, but they aren’t as organized as I’d like them.
I don’t know if age is turning me into my mom, but my hope is that all if not the large majority of our home will be organized in a way where everything has a logical place. So while we have some personal, professional, spiritual and physical goals for the upcoming year, the goal I’m setting for our home is to do just that – organize it.
In hopes of having a space to refer back to both motivate myself and keep myself on track, here’s what I’m hoping to do with our space.

KITCHEN:
Organize the Pantry:
While I’m not necessarily expecting our pantry to look something like what you’d see on Pinterest (it would be nice though), I want it organized so that I can see everything when I open it without having to search. The way it looks right now, I have to shift things around to look for certain items and it’d be nice if each shelf and area had a place so I knew exactly where to look for what. Right now my eyes drift all over the place when searching for items.
I brought labels in the spring that I hope to use for some of our jars and containers. I’m not sure if I’ll go as far as to put everything into jars, but I will definitely use the labels for the items we currently store in them.
Organize the COFFEE CABINET:
We have a cabinet in our house for our coffee, tea, and hot cocoa which in theory, has been really convenient. We both know exactly where to go to grab what we need in the mornings, which saves us a lot of time. However, lately it’s been looking a little suspect because I’ll put things in there with no rhyme or reason aside from it being coffee, tea or hot cocoa. This creates a problem similar to what we have with our pantry where I have to dig for certain items. This should be quick and easy to organize though.

UPSTAIRS:
ORGANIZE THE CLOSETS:
The closets are not organized – at all. Outside of us having our designated spaces, there’s no organization to it. I’d love to get some closet organizers to help us to see everything in our closet at once. Nothing fancy or necessarily color-coded, but definitely functional. We also plan to go through our clothes again and begin to sift out things we want to give away, throw out, or keep – something we haven’t done in a bit.

OUR BASEMENT:
Our basement space:
Ugh. This is one that just writing this out makes me feel overwhelmed because it has been, since we moved, a dump space. It’s organized, but only in the sense that things are neatly placed in areas in the basement. However, I’d ideally want that space clear or where things are hidden so that space could eventually be used for something else. I’ve imagined it as a future den area with a couch that doubles as a sleeping space or guests or a playroom or “man-cave” but right now it’s hard to imagine anything with all the bins in it.
The plan was to have my mom help me with this, but I think I’m probably going to ask for her help through FaceTime or something.
THE LAUNDRY ROOM:
The laundry room is another area that feels overwhelming to take on. While there isn’t stuff in there like there is in our basement, I think my mind runs the most with ideas for how to update it. There’s a crack in the tile on the floor, but I don’t have any extra tiles leftover from the previous owner, so sometimes I think about just re-tiling it if we can’t find a match. I want to get those laundry bin organizers where you can separate your items before adding them into the washer. I’ve even thought about painting or adding wallpaper to the space. It’s like I get so caught up in the ideas I have that I end up thinking the task would be too overwhelming rather than taking things step by step. The first step would be to organize it.
In addition to the laundry bins, I’d like to utilize the cabinets we have to place certain items in certain cabinets – labeled.
Those are some of our plans for organizing our home this year. The hope is that by having things organized by function and product within our cabinets and drawers, things will work more efficiently throughout. Now let’s hear from you!
