Today we’re sharing what our ideas are for updating our kitchen on a budget!

The kitchen is arguably one of the places we spent the most time. We eat there, drink coffee there, entertain guests in there. It’s one of the things we like about having an open concept where things just flow into the next room.
It’s also the room that’s easily the most finished. It was updated by the previous owner and since then we’ve just been making little changes here and there to make it more ours such as adding plants, etc. However, there are a couple more things we want to do in the future to make it feel more like ours in 2020. We’re still in the planning process, so we’re not sure if we will do everything we’re writing down, but as we hope to have most of our home fully furnished this year, we’re planning to do quite a lot!
Curious to know some of the things we’re thinking about potentially doing to our kitchen?
KITCHEN PRINTS:
Our walls are very bare in our kitchen, which while I am not necessarily opposed to, I’d love to adorn the walls with something. The previous owners had a faux fireplace that they had in the wall, which I’ve thought about too, but lately, we’ve been leaning more towards prints.
I really like the ones because they’re cute and add a little pop of color without it being overpowering.
I recently purchased this one since it reminds me of our various post-church brunch trips to restaurants in Delaware.
CHANGE THE CURTAINS:
These curtains came with our home and are really good quality, so we did not feel we needed to change them. However, as we continue to make our house more ours, we wanted to replace the curtains with something a little less patterned. I am not really a fan of the current print, so hoping to find something a little more solid or in a tinier print.
I’d want something that ideally would work well with the rug we purchase, however.
RUG FOR THE KITCHEN:
This one is something I’ve been thinking about adding to go in front of our stove and sink – kind of positioned in the middle. It’s nice to have something to stand on top of as we’re cooking or doing dishes, but it also adds a little pop of color to our kitchen that’s pretty grey right now. These ones are pretty!
FLOOR PLANT:
I love a good floor plant to bring some extra greenery into space. Since I don’t want to utilize all of the counter-space we have, the next best thing is to bring greenery to the floor. I love the idea of a plant something like this, but I think topiary plants would look very nice as well. I really love these ones as potential floor plans for the house.
NEW LIGHT FIXTURE:
I would love to potentially replace the pendant lights we have the kitchen to something else. This is an unnecessary fix because the current light fixtures are fine, but I saw these ones and now I’m considering swapping out the pendant ones we have in our kitchen with these ones.
KIMI’S CORNER:
I’d love to get a new rug for her water bowl that we can alternate between since right now we only have one. I also think it might be kind of cute to give her a little print portrait somewhere.
KITCHEN ORGANIZATION:
I’ve always liked the idea of a more organized pantry, but by the time we moved, I just sort of stuck things where they made sense to me and didn’t think about how to make it appear organized. I’d love to get some containers to organize our pantry a bit and some in-drawer organizers for our drawers. I recently brought these labels and have started to place them on the containers we already own.
NEW MARBLE COUNTERTOP:
This is something that if we do actually decide to do would happen much, much later. Like perhaps even after children or after they’re older later. It would be a pretty pricey renovation since marble countertops are not cheap and getting them installed by a professional adds a pretty penny to it as well. It’s an unnecessary upgrade as we love the one we have, but one that I am considering making the kitchen a little more uniform in the future.
Right now our kitchen island’s countertop color is different than the countertop by the stove. I’d love to get them the same color so they match. I would need to see a mark up of this first before we decide, but I feel like while I like the black countertops against the white, I think the kitchen would look even nicer than it already does if the countertops were the same color.
Another more expensive option would be to change the countertops to a completely different color, but it’s also not necessary or needed.
We may end up leaving it as is, but it is something that has come to mind. In some ways, I kind of like that it’s not super matchy, though, so I’m back and forth about this one.
