In October, my husband and I went to the Brandywine Zoo intending to walk around and see the animals with our daughter. It was approaching our area’s peak week so we thought it would be the perfect time to see all that it had to offer. Once we got out of the car and saw all of the little kids wearing costumes, we realized that there was some event going on, which we later found out was Brandywine Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo. Before that moment, we had no idea that The Brandywine Zoo also hosted it’s version of a similar event that The Philadelphia Zoo hosts every year until that moment.
Here are some of the things we enjoyed about our experience participating in it this year.
THE VENDORS:
While we were there, there were quite a few vendors spread around the zoo selling items such as knitted pumpkins or advertising services that they provide to children of all ages. There was even a mobile coffee cart, Lucky Shot Coffee, where you could purchase and enjoy seasonal drinks such as their Spice Girl drink, which was their take on the Pumpkin Spice Latte. Although we didn’t buy anything outside of our drinks, it was cool to see that this was an option there for people looking to support local businesses or receive resources.
THE COST:
Being that the Brandywine Zoo is smaller than The Philadelphia Zoo, it is more affordable in terms of cost. For adults, it’s only $9 and for children under three years old, it’s completely free. For that price, you get to see condors, toucans, and other smaller animals. When we went we only paid $16 as tickets for entry into the zoo for the event were $8 instead of $9.
IT’S IN THE MIDDLE OF A PARK:
The Brandywine Zoo is right in the middle of The Brandywine Park that goes through and alongside the Brandywine Creek. It is also a walking distance away from Wilmington’s city center. It’s location can make what might have been a 1 ½ or 2-hour visit to the zoo as an all-day thing where you can spend time walking through the park and ending your day eating dinner at one of the establishments in The Chancery, not too far from one of the trails in the park.
The Animals:
For it to be such a small zoo, they still have a pretty good amount of animals for you to view during your time there. Whether you want to see a bobcat or a panda, there are plenty of smaller animals to lay your eyes on and learn more about.
