During our babymoon to Newport, we visited another mansion on the same day that we trekked from Hammond’s Castle to Castle Hill on Crane Estate. While we didn’t spend a ton of time inside of the mansion because we had just missed one of the guided tours and both of us were getting hungry, we did spend some time walking the grounds outside of it and being completely in awe of its beauty.
The estate, which is nestled near a beach reminds me a lot of the Parisian-inspired villas and mansions we’ve visited previously. I’m a sucker for that style of decor, so I always find myself pointing out similarities between the homes we visit that seem to have been built during the same time period.
While there, this precious little girl and her mom complimented me and said that I looked like a princess. While race usually isn’t relevant, she was a dark-skin, black girl so when she said that I saw myself in her and kind of flashbacked briefly to my own child. Growing up as a child during a time when dark-skin women weren’t always viewed as being conventionally beautiful, I really struggled with viewing myself as beautiful during some points in my childhood. In some ways seeing her face light up when her mom said, “my daughter keeps saying how you’re so pretty and that you look like a princess” was also a very healing moment for my childhood self. I know I’ve gone off-topic a bit, but I thought that was so kind of them to say to me.
Han ended up taking a lot of these photographs, particularly the ones with me in them and the ones where I was too hot and physically uncomfortable to walk any further and I love how his turned out!
