The Coffee Grinder
Regardless of where we travel, one of the first things we look for in our research of different locations is coffee shops. How many coffee shops does an area have and where are they? In our research of coffee shops in Newport, The Coffee Grinder was constantly recommended as a place that you absolutely HAVE to try while there.
Located on Bowen’s Wharf, this coffee shop awards some pretty spectacular views of the bay during the winter and yachts during the summer. When we went last July, we got up earlier in the morning, grabbed a seat at the docks after ordering our coffee and got to people-watch as they cleaned the yachts. It’s quite fascinating and prompted a lot of conversation between us wondering what it’s like to be able to afford one and what they must do for a living.
But back to the coffee.

“It was highly recommended online and after visiting the shop, we can honestly see why.”
When you first walk into the cafe, it’s small, but it’s cozy and makes you feel like family. It’s shack-sized, so there aren’t any tables indoors, but there’s plenty of seating outside on their porch area, which I guarantee you’d probably want to sit in any way when it’s warm outside.
Usually, there’s a line, especially if you go when most people are awake and craving their daily coffee fix, so I’d recommend if there’s two of you, strategizing it so that one person finds a seat while the other orders. I’ve noticed most people tend to do this as well to ensure they have a seat.

Once you’re officially inside, you notice they serve pastries, but most of the emphasis is placed on their amazing coffee. They have quite the selection of coffee drinks, flavored syrups, and milk (non-dairy versions too) options.
The barista, who I believe is also the owner of the cafe, was very informative, funny, and patient with us as my husband at that point was still a bit undecided. They have a way of making you feel comfortable, even as an outsider to the area, visiting for the first time.
The first day we went I opted for a mocha latte, which was incredible. It’s really hard to mess up a mocha latte, but she added something else to it to my husband’s coffee, which I wish I could remember now but I can’t, unfortunately. It was something she recommended based on what he was in the mood for. Although my memory, unfortunately, is failing me at this moment, it shows you how much they know their coffee and how willing they are to help.
If you are planning to visit Newport, Rhode Island soon, I would recommend that you attend The Coffee Grinder. It’s such an amazing place to visit with great coffee, great people serving the coffee, and a stunning view. It was highly recommended online and after visiting the shop, we can honestly see why.
