One of my favorite things about living where we live is we get to experience all four seasons – especially fall. There is something about the crisp, cool weather, the seasonal drinks, and the fall landscapes that help to make Philly look especially beautiful this time of year. If you’re traveling to Philadelphia during the fall, it’s a great time to go, but like anywhere you go, it’s important to have a heads-up on what you should pack. As a result, we thought we’d share some of our recommendations for what to pack during the fall season when you’re visiting the area for the first time.
A crewneck sweater or cardigan
Fall weather in Philadelphia can be a little unpredictable sometimes. Some days it’s the beautiful, fall weather you’d expect, and other days it’s abnormally hot or frigid. It often depends on what time of the fall season you’re visiting, but sometimes it just is. I remember one time a couple of summers ago, school had been back in session for a few weeks already and it was scorching outside when I was leaving work. It was cool that morning, but by the time the afternoon came, it was summer temperatures all over again. We recommend packing a crewneck or cardigan just in case, so if it’s cold you can throw it on, but if it’s hot you can tie it around your waste.
PHILADELPHIA PASS:
While this isn’t something you’d wear, this is something I’d certainly recommend if you’re planning on visiting a few of the attractions available with the Philadelphia City Pass. You can order in advance and get access to 3 or 5 area attractions at a discounted rate! This is not sponsored – we just highly recommend it for people visiting Philly for the first time.
BOOTS:
Whether riding boots or rain boots, boots are a must during the fall. Although it’s not typically as rainy as it is during the spring, there are still quite many rainy, fall days (which makes for a cozy, indoor ambiance) in Philly. I’d recommend packing a pair of waterproof riding boots of any height or rain boots that can withstand some rainy days.
A JACKET:
You definitely want to pack a jacket – even if you don’t plan on wearing one on the days where it’s warmer outside. As I mentioned above, while the weather can be a little unpredictable during this time of the year, the days that it is cool, it can get pretty chilly. I love wearing a utility jacket, a trench, a lightweight bomber jacket or a leather jacket during the fall season and would encourage you to pack a jacket too just to be on the safe (or warm) side.
COMFORTABLE FLATS OR SNEAKERS:
I am sure this goes without saying, but with Philadelphia being named as The Most Walkable City this year, you’re going to want to pack a pair shoes that’ll be comfortable for you as you walk around. There are many stylish fall sneaker options and flats to wear, but I’d stick to ones that you know for sure you can see yourself walking in a lot.
A Hat or a Baseball Cap:
Similar to the points of above, it’s nice to have some coverage for your head for those days when the weather can be a bit chilly, sunny and/or windy. Sometimes during the fall in Philadelphia, it’s a little bit of all three. I love wearing a beanie or a baseball cap on windy days. Bonus points if you wear one that features one of our sports teams.
A Keycard:
In addition to Philadelphia being a very walkable city, it’s also very easy to get around using public transportation. While this isn’t something you would technically pack, it is something I recommend purchasing as soon as you get there at either 30th Street Station or Suburban Station if you intend on riding the trains.
